3 Reasons why a journalist hasn't responded to your pitch and what to do about it


We've all been there, even those of us who work in PR. The feeling of frustration when your carefully crafted email pitch lies ignored in somebody's inbox... or worse, discarded in their deleted folder.

Was it something you said?

Possibly. But it's much more likely that it's something you didn't say.

1) You waffled on about yourself too much

Of course you have to introduce yourself, but don't spend paragraphs talking about your past, hopes and future dreams and then expect the publication to welcome you with open arms. Tell the journalist why you think your story suits their publication and most important, why it would be relevant or helpful to their audience.

2) Too. Much. Writing.

Journalists and editors are usually extremely pressed for time. If they can't glean what you want in the first few seconds, they won't stick around to read the rest of the email. What is the hook of your story? Make sure it's as close to the top of your email as possible so it's nice and clear.

3) It was too genetic

If you sent a blanket email to several people without tweaking and adapting each pitch, the journalists will know (we're pretty magical like that). Similarly, if you sent your email to a generic address, or worse, to a specific person but failed to address them by their name, then the chances of you getting a reply are slim, Jim. Do your research, and write the type of email that you'd be happy to receive in your inbox.
